ECT: A Light in the Darkness

ECT: A Light in the Darkness is a non-profit organization based in the Boston area that provides information to, and support for, individuals, caregivers, and health providers who want to learn more about ECT, or electro-convulsive therapy, as a treatment for depression.  We know that there is a stigma attached to the use of ECT and that some people may fear it. But we also know that it can be an effective treatment and so we advocate for more awareness and use of ECT.
Our members include individuals who have suffered from depression and have received relief from their illnesses with the aid of ECT, as well as family members and friends who support and aid those who have had depression and ECT treatments.  We have also received support from a number of psychiatrists who support the use of ECT.

We recognize that ECT is not necessarily the appropriate treatment for all who suffer from depression.  We also know that prescription drugs play an important role in the treatment of depression.  Many of our group members use prescription medications in combination with ECT.  But we also believe that too often, depressed individuals are required to try too many drugs to find the right one.  Many of those drugs take time to work—or don’t work at all—and some will have strong side effects that may vary from patient to patient.  ECT is often viewed as a last resort for patients, yet for many individuals, ECT can work fairly quickly and have modest, predictable side effects.

We have seen, among our members, that ECT can be a very effective form of treatment for many people with depression.  On this website, we will provide some information about ECT, links to other sites, responses to FAQs, and some personal comments about how ECT has worked for our members.

We also hope that we can provide support to individuals and family members who are interested in talking about the possibility of starting ECT treatments.  Please feel free to contact us with questions and we will attempt to get an appropriate member of our group to respond to you as soon as we can.

In addition, if you live in the Boston area, and would like to join us at our regularly scheduled meetings, please contact us and we will let you know about our meetings.

ECT: A Light in the Darkness is a 501(c)(3) organization and any donations to it are tax-deductible.  We are grateful for any contributions that will help us advance our mission and reach more people in need.
